Elif Uras’s first monograph and site-specific installation The Source will be on view between November 24 and December 30, 2018 The Source, a site-specific installation by Elif Uras, will be presented at a historic storefront next to the Galata Greek School between November 24 and December 30, 2018. Drawing from various historical and cultural references, Uras examines concepts such as shared heritage, hybridity, productivity, tradition, and labor in her site-specific installation, which will be her first presentation in Istanbul since her 2016 solo exhibition Hayal Meyal at Galerist. A comprehensive monograph that documents the artist’s recent works will also be available at the space. This project is realized under the leadership of Galerist and is supported by the Kale Group. Elif Uras The Source November 24 – December 30, 2018 Tuesday – Saturday, 11am – 6pm Kemeraltı Caddesi No: 25/C Beyoğlu Istanbul, Turkey (next to Galata Greek School) Uras’s first monograph looks at the artist’s practice from multiple perspectives. Realized as part of Kale Group’s 2018 project in support of ceramics in art, Elif Uras’s first monograph is edited by L. İpek Ulusoy Akgül, and features essays by internationally acclaimed writers, Ahu Antmen, Amy Smith-Stewart, Kathy Battista and Merve Ünsal. The publication explores critical issues around the feminist undertones of the artist’s practice, her interest in utilizing “traditional” techniques in ceramic works, and the interplay between her paintings and ceramics via her unique patterning and ornamentation. It also includes a conversation between the editor and the artist, and an extensive visual documentation of Uras’s works. Published bilingually in Turkish and English by Galerist Publishing, the monograph will be distributed in Turkey locally as well as in the US, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and beyond. “The ceramics works of Elif Uras create an exceptional experience for each one of us.” Kale Group’s President and CEO Zeynep Bodur Okyay states that Kale Group has made it their mission to promote ceramics in art and to support artists through the resources they provide for arts and culture. She further points out: “We want to create a series of success stories for Turkey’s future. Our priority is to be involved in innovative and inspiring projects, and to encourage like-minded people and communities. This year, we are proud to be supporting the publication of the first monograph of our internationally renowned contemporary artist Elif Uras. The ceramic works of Uras, through which we can witness the artist’s distinct imagination, generate an exceptional experience for us. Uras’s first monograph sheds light on her practice through texts by distinguished writers, facilitating further recognition of her practice within Turkey and beyond. Uras traces the diverse traditions of our geography and transforms them into something unique and contemporary, which I believe is a critical contribution to our global discourse.”
